Here you will find an overview of the services I offer as an IT service provider and developer. Please note that I can only accept projects that are not in direct connection or competition with my main role as a Research Software Engineer at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

The services I offer cover the following areas:

Consulting, Data Analysis & Project Support

Digital Humanities projects face specific technical challenges: Which tools are suitable for analyzing my corpus? How can I structure heterogeneous research data sustainably? Which statistical or machine learning methods are appropriate for my research question—and how do I interpret the results in a humanities context?

With a dual qualification in computer science and the humanities, I advise and support projects at the intersection of both disciplines—based on my own research practice.

As a Research Software Engineer in the DFG Collaborative Research Center 1475 “Metaphors of Religion” (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), I have developed and applied research software for text-analytical questions. At the Dr. Eberle Center for Digital Competencies at the University of Tübingen, I have trained students and doctoral researchers in applied programming and data science. Additionally, I have published several articles on DH-related topics, both independently and collaboratively.

Research projects often have extensive datasets whose potential has not yet been fully exploited—whether a historical text corpus, a survey database, or a bibliometric dataset. I assist in the systematic analysis of such data: from initial exploratory review to the application of machine learning methods, always with a focus on humanities research logic and the traceability of results.

Areas of Focus

  • Text analysis and preparation (NLP methods, corpus analysis, topic modeling, named entity recognition)
  • Exploratory data analysis (EDA), visualization, and data cleaning
  • Machine learning: classification, clustering, regression
  • Data preparation, modeling, and storage
  • Application and evaluation of AI and ML methods in research contexts
  • Assessment of standard solutions versus custom software development

Scope of Services

  • Consulting on method and tool selection, as well as project planning
  • Conducting analyses as a one-time project or ongoing support
  • Preparation and documentation of results in a traceable format
  • Handover of reproducible, documented code
  • Conceptualization and support for DH projects from planning to implementation

Automation of Editorial Workflows

The preparation and publication of academic texts still involve significant manual effort in many editorial offices—from formatting submitted manuscripts to typesetting and providing output in multiple formats. I develop and implement solutions that systematically automate this process while meeting the specific requirements of academic publishing standards.

The foundation of my work in this area is hands-on experience: I have worked as a developer and team member for the journals Entangled Religions and Philosophy and the Mind Sciences (PhiMiSci), gaining firsthand knowledge of their editorial processes. As the lead developer of the Magic Manuscript Maker, I created a productively used solution based on a Markdown single-source publishing (SSP) approach—manuscripts are captured once and automatically converted into multiple output formats.

Technologies & Experience

  • Single-source publishing with Markdown and Pandoc
  • Open Journal Systems (OJS)—setup, customization, and workflow integration
  • Automated conversion to common publication formats (HTML, PDF, XML/JATS, etc.)
  • Editorial practice in academic journal projects

Scope of Services

  • Analysis and optimization of existing editorial workflows
  • Development and implementation of automated publication pipelines
  • Setup and customization of OJS instances
  • Training editorial teams in using new systems

Web Development & Web Hosting

A professional digital presence is essential for research projects, institutions, and publishers alike—whether as a project website, publication platform, or digital exhibition. I develop tailored web solutions that align with the specific requirements and budget of each project.

Depending on the scope and needs, different approaches are used: For content-rich, interactive applications, I rely on modern frameworks like Svelte or WordPress; for lean, fast, and low-maintenance sites, static solutions with Jekyll or Hugo are ideal—especially suitable for project websites with minimal upkeep.

I host custom solutions on my own dedicated infrastructure (Hetzner). All hosted projects run on European server infrastructure, ensuring GDPR compliance—enabling short communication channels and reliable, long-term support.

Scope of Services

  • Concept and development of dynamic web applications (Svelte, WordPress)
  • Creation of static websites (Jekyll, Hugo)—performant, secure, and easy to maintain
  • Long-term technical support and maintenance (if required)
  • Hosting on dedicated European server infrastructure (GDPR-compliant)

Integration of AI and Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) offer significant potential in text processing—but they are not equally suitable for every use case. Whether and how AI-based methods can be meaningfully integrated into existing workflows depends on the specific requirements, available data, and quality standards of the project.

The choice of model is not a trivial matter. For many institutions—especially in the public and academic sectors—data protection requirements and digital sovereignty are critical criteria. Therefore, I explicitly include local solutions (i.e., models running on your own infrastructure) and European alternatives like Mistral in my consulting—as equally valid options alongside well-known US providers.

Typical Applications

  • Automation and support for existing processes (e.g., text summarization, classification, structure recognition, automated translation)
  • Text analysis and annotation in research contexts (e.g., semantic markup, pattern recognition in large corpora)

Scope of Services

  • Feasibility analysis: Is LLM deployment suitable for your project—and if so, in what form and with which model?
  • Implementation: Development and integration of custom LLM-based solutions into existing systems and workflows—optionally cloud-based, hosted in Europe, or fully local
